The word “mayate” derives from traditional nahuatl and it stands for figeater beetle. It’s contemporary connotation describes something lesser or grotesque, also used to represent a human stereotype that bring us back to the relations between class, race, gender and sexuality.
Underneath the new concept its past stands for something that the ancient pre hispanic cultures devoted interest and appreciation for its beauty. My purpose by creating this piece of furniture was to take over the original meaning of the word by creating an upsycled pine wood and leather shelving set-up, to visually regain beauty in what someone diminished as trash.
